I call squirrel! Many times during the week I get distracted by many random diversions, and it reminds me of my dog Max when a squirrel comes along. I am pulled many different directions that no matter how many times I hear that still small voice in my heart saying, “Geneva…slow down. Spend time with me,” the next distraction clouds my mind. I get so frustrated with myself because my innermost desire is to sit in God’s presence and soak up His amazing love and wisdom. I see this same problem all throughout God’s word. His children constantly getting distracted by trivial hiccups. One moment they are walking hand in hand with the Lord, and then a squirrel of a distraction runs out in front of them, and they are chasing something that leads them further from their purpose in Christ. I know God has a sense of humor because while sitting in my friend’s classroom during a break, a squirrel literally fell from the tile in her ceiling and lands on me! Not a coincidence at all! God was literally getting my attention. Distractions aren’t necessarily evil temptations. My distractions all everyday task that I let pile up. I mean lets be honest. I am the one who has decided to wear all the hats I have. Everyday God reminds me that He has given me specific mountains for this time in my life. I must first be a good steward with those mountains. So, why do we allow ourselves to get so distracted? Why in the middle of someone’s prayer do we start thinking about laundry that needs to be folded, or all the I forgot to do list? It isn’t that we don’t want to listen or pay attention. I truly feel with all my heart that God wants us to start prioritizing and simplifying our lives. Instead of us being so burned out and tired all the time. What good are we if we are walking around exhausted and distracted? He wants us to make Him our first and foremost priority. It is in this time with Him that we will learn what distractions we need to let go of. Satan is trying to distract us through many outlets today: social media, television, excessive wants, friends, and even career development. Let us remember that our God is faithful and it is us that need to reign in our thoughts and attention.
1 Corinthians 7:35 – And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction. Ephesians 6:16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Dear God, Help me to not be distracted by the world’s demands or satan’s faucets. I am a child of God and I know who I am. I want to set You up as my first and foremost priority. It is You who will set my path straight. I lean not to my own understanding, and I acknowledge You. Set my steps today and everyday as I go forth serving You. Love, Me.
