As school comes to an end, I like to look back to assess the year. I try not to look at the year like TEA or administration. I understand the importance of the test results and student growth, but that is not what I choose to weigh my year by. I look at it by relationships. Did I make a difference in the lives of my students? Did the way I teach and run my class lead anyone closer to God? Teaching in a public school can be a struggle with meeting expectations of everyone around you, but the only expectation I try to put above all others is the expectation of God. He reminds me everyday that I am not a teacher solely for the purpose of having highest scores or winning awards, but to love every child I come in contact with the way God would love them. I admit some days it is harder than others, but it never ceases to amaze me how God sends little reminders of His call in my life. Yes, I am a competitive person, and I thrive on success like most of us. So, I do get distracted by the demands of meeting growth goals, and I cry with the child who tries their hardest to do better, but absolutely can’t seem to grasp their expected goal. I remind them that I am proud of them no matter what, and that I know they have made leaps and bounds during the year. That they may not have met their growth on the reading test, but they have made new friends and made growth in their social anxiety. God has put me on this mountain of teaching, and I love everyday I get to tell them that God loves them, and that He has come to save them. My niece sings a song at church that I love, “Everybody Needs Saving. It isn’t supposed to be complicated~don’t overthink it. No strings attached. He loves you. He loves you. Call on Jesus, say His name, just receive Him in your heart, and you will be saved, and God has raised Him from the grave, just believe it in your heart and you will be saved.” Remember God has put you on a specific mountain as well. He gives us all a calling to serve Him, and to show others His love. To lead them to salvation. Amen.
Isaiah 52:7 says, “How beautiful upon the mountains Are the feet of him who brings good news, Who proclaims peace, Who brings glad tidings of good things, Who proclaims salvation, Who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
Dear Lord,
Thank you so much for the calling you have placed in our lives. Keep reminding us of who we are and what You have called us to do for Your kingdom. Amen.
